I. ABSTRACT

Artificial Intelligence is an inevitable aspect in today’s scenario. The potential benefits of artificial intelligence are huge and so are the dangers. The socio- economic repercussions of artificial intelligence have led to its footprints in the legal field. AI becomes detrimental to a society, socially and economically, when it hinders societal development of values and morals, leads to unemployment, acts as a threat to privacy and personal data safety etc. Cyber- attacks have increased by 125% globally, major victims being children and old aged citizens, according to a survey. 1 According to another survey, 29% of teenagers’ values are severely deteriorating because of the use of AI, globally. Such effects of AI have led to coming up of various laws in India and abroad. In India, the Information Technology Act, 2000 was introduced to regulate AI related activities and to help in gaining compensation and damages in case of breach of one’s data privacy. A Digital Data Protection Bill, 2023 was also introduced, early in the year, which has recently been passed by the Rajya Sabha. But what is the use of such acts if hacking, online frauds and cyber bullying are still prevalent in India? AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), India’s most reputed and trusted Medical Centre, suffered through a second data attack by cyber criminals on February 11, 2023. Is India doing enough to protect its citizens from such impacts? Can we not see these repercussions because they nullify and hide behind the advantages of AI? Are we as a society helping the hackers by being careless? As per UN’s recent statement, there is an emerging need for the countries to impose and implement stricter laws to protect data privacy of their citizens. How binding is the UN’s opinion? The answer to all these questions shall be given by the end of the research paper.
