ABSTRACT

Despite the enforcement of Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929 before the independence and, The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, after the independence, child marriages pose a significant problem in India, with millions of girls being married before reaching the age of 18. To address this problem in contemporary society, the Indian Parliament introduced a bill titled the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The suggested amendment aims to raise the lowest marriage age for females from 18 to 21 years.

The paper examines the effectiveness of child marriage laws in India, with a specific emphasis on the legal framework on the "Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The Bill has been studied in terms of its potential impact on the social status of women, given its primary focus on women's welfare.
