ABSTRACT

The rapid proliferation of social media platforms has revolutionized communication and connectivity, presenting both opportunities and challenges in the realm of cybersecurity. This research paper delves into the nuanced relationship between social media usage and cybercrime, focusing on the context of West Bengal, India. Through a comprehensive case study approach, this study aims to elucidate the multifaceted impact of social media on cybercrime dynamics within the region.

Drawing upon a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, this study examines the correlation between social media adoption rates and the incidence of cybercrimes in West Bengal. By analysing empirical data and conducting in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity experts, and social media users, this research endeavours to uncover the various mechanisms through which social media platforms facilitate cybercriminal activities, such as phishing, identity theft, cyberbullying, and online fraud.

Furthermore, this paper explores the socio-cultural, economic, and technological factors that contribute to the susceptibility of West Bengal's population to cybercrimes via social media channels. It investigates the role of digital literacy, socio-economic disparities, and regulatory frameworks in shaping the landscape of cybercrime in the region.

Moreover, this research sheds light on the effectiveness of existing measures, policies, and initiatives aimed at mitigating the risks associated with social media-driven cybercrimes in West Bengal. Through critical analysis and comparative evaluation, this study identifies gaps, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing cybersecurity resilience and fostering a safer online environment for the residents of West Bengal.

Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between social media dynamics and cybercrime phenomena, offering insights that can inform policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders in devising targeted strategies for combatting cyber threats in the digital age.
