Vanshika Misra, LLB, KES’S Shri Jayantilal H. Patel Law College

ABSTRACT

Domestic abuse still remains one of the most pressing international crises, while adult partners are often presumed to be the victims of domestic violence, children who live in violent households and witness violence in their surroundings are equally vulnerable to the psychological consequences. In this study, the psychological impact of domestic violence on children is discussed in detail, such as effects on their behaviour, emotions, cognition, and development. This paper also discusses how legal systems can protect children from domestic violence with particular reference to significant legal frameworks that place children's interests first. The paper seeks to identify the importance of mental health services, safety environments and child protection legislation, it also suggests interventions and solutions like cognitive behavioural therapy, play therapy, and trauma-focused therapy, etc., which could help a child overcome the trauma they have experienced in their households.

Keywords: Psychological effects, domestic violence, children, emotional trauma, behavioural problems, attachment issues, legal frameworks, child protection.
