Mr. Vijay Kumar, Research Scholar, Department of Law, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana, India

ABSTRACT

The rise of social media has ushered in an era of unprecedented ease and reach for communication, but it has also brought a nefarious consequence: the proliferation of online defamation. This research paper delves into the multifaceted nature of this phenomenon.

The paper begins by exploring how online platforms have transformed the landscape of defamation. It analyzes the unique characteristics of online communication that exacerbate the spread of defamatory content, such as anonymity and virality. It then examines the psychological impact of online attacks, highlighting the potential for social isolation, depression, and anxiety among victims.

Furthermore, the paper critically examines the limitations of existing legal frameworks in addressing online defamation. The role of social media platforms is also explored, analyzing their legal responsibilities in content moderation and potential liability for defamation.

By exploring these multifaceted aspects of online defamation, this research paper aims to provide potential solutions that protect both freedom of expression and online reputations.
