ABSTRACT

This research aims to explore how States try to use education to control how the collective memory is constructed, and the official history is articulated. We study the school curricula, the textbooks, the censorship, and the propaganda to understand how the different political regimes produce and sustain certain narratives, which they term ‘patriotic.’

This qualitative study emanated from people’s lived experiences of the interplay between the need to sustain the country as one while also having to impose ideas and practices. It seeks to challenge the perception of history being taught only as a subject but also as a mechanism of nationhood. In this case, we will conduct an empirical analysis and a rationale - politics of history in different political regimes.
