ABSTRACT
Global and rising E-waste pollution is becoming an emerging problem that requires solid management coupled with sustainable legal regimes. This paper explores the state-of-the-art legal paradigms in practice for managing e-waste with a main focus on Indian E-Waste (Management) Rules,2016 and global treaties e.g. Basel Convention, EU WEEE Directive etc. It underlines the problem of India, problems with enforcement, what we do not know and the role of the informal sector in e-waste processing. The paper finally looks at the sustainable alternatives of technological innovations, eco-design and circular economy models through an international best practices comparison with India's framework. It also mentions the necessity of furthering public- private partnerships and international cooperation for tackling the e-waste problem. Finally, this paper suggests policy-oriented recommendations to improve India's e-waste management regime, emphasizing stricter regulations, effective enforcement and more sustainable design/recyclability measures.
