Mahashweta Mitra, School of Law, Bennett University, Greater Noida

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the urgent need for a standalone legislative framework on Artificial Intelligence in India. It examines the UK’s pro innovation; principles based on regulatory model and contrasts it with India’s current legal vacuum. The paper highlights key challenges arising from the absence of AI specific laws, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, lack of accountability, and national security concerns. It proposes the creation of AI research centers, public engagement, and implementation of infrastructural recommendations such as AIRAWAT and the sandbox framework. A comprehensive and ethically grounded legal framework is essential to ensure responsible AI governance and innovation in India.

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, regulation, data privacy, algorithmic bias, accountability, legal framework
