ABSTRACT

As the practice of untouchability since ages has denied equal opportunities to the dalits, it is high time that they get equal treatment from all. The main aim of this study is to assess the condition of the untouchables in the modern times. Based on the problems stated and the objectives outlined, this study specifically aims to analyze the impact of, or whether various legislations have been useful in providing a better social status to the dalits. The objective is to bring about a change in the thinking of the people regarding untouchability and further question the practice of untouchability with logic. The study further analyzes the emergence of untouchability and how has its practice been transformed with changing times. The paper further aims to appreciate the work done by the judiciary in bringing about a positive change in the mindset of the people by its various landmark judgements. The study seeks to find how the religious texts have promoted the untouchability or whether it was just a wrong interpretation of the intentions of the author. Keeping all this in mind we would like to address the various problems faced by the untouchables so as to get the idea about the real problems that are faced by the dalits and provide for various ways which would be helpful in providing a better living condition to them.
