Synopsis


The present article defines what cognizable and non- cognizable offense are; the statutory obligation of the officer in- charge of a police station to register the information given to him about an offence, in the manner directed by law, or specified by the State government in this regards; what sort of legal remedies are available to the complainant aggrieved by refusal on part of such policeman to register his complaint or information; and the punishment prescribed under the Indian Penal Code, 1860 for such disobedience of duty by such policeman.
