Wildlife Crime Control Bureau: Critical Analysis

Avika Singh, Amity Law School, Amity University, Noida

ABSTRACT

This research paper examines the role and effectiveness of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) in India in combatting wildlife crime. The WCCB is a statutory multi-disciplinary body tasked with coordinating and enforcing wildlife laws, investigating wildlife crime, and promoting wildlife conservation in India. The paper provides an overview of the history and development of the WCCB, its mandate and functions, and its organizational structure. It also evaluates the WCCB's performance in terms of its impact on reducing wildlife crime and protecting endangered species. The research draws on a range of primary and secondary sources, including official records, academic literature, and interviews with key stakeholders, to provide a comprehensive analysis of the WCCB's strengths and weaknesses. The findings suggest that while the WCCB has made significant strides in controlling wildlife crime, there are still gaps in its implementation, including inadequate resources, limited capacity, and coordination challenges. The paper concludes with recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of the WCCB, including increasing its resources, strengthening its capacity-building initiatives, and improving inter-agency coordination.
