Zero FIR: A Timely Boon

Virangad Singh, The Law School, University of Jammu

ABSTRACT

This article explores the concept of "Zero FIR" in the context of the Indian criminal justice system, examining its legal provisions, historical development, and impact on ensuring timely justice. Zero FIRs, initially recommended by the Justice Verma Committee in response to the Nirbhaya gang rape case, allows the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) in any police station, irrespective of territorial jurisdiction.

The article highlights the effectiveness of Zero FIRs in addressing issues related to geographical barriers, particularly for women who face offences in locations distant from their home. By allowing FIR registration at the nearest police station, Zero FIRs ensure a swift and hassle-free trial, offering victims the assurance of justice without being hindered by geographical limitations.

However, the article also acknowledges challenges associated with Zero FIR such as the lack of public awareness, inconsistent implementation across states, procedural complexities, and inadequate training for law enforcement personnel.
