ABSTRACT

Rispana, a perennial river, which in ancient times was known as Rishiparna, is a tributary of the Song river that originates from the Laal Tippa Hills of Mussorie and after crossing the Mossey Fall and the Shikhar Fall enters the Doon Valley. In its 27 kms journey, it covers a catchment area of around 53.45 sq km.[1]

It is known as the lifeline of the Doon Valley because it is the major source of water supply to the city of Dehradun. The river flows both on the surface and underground hence plays a major role in maintaining the groundwater level in the city. But due to over-population and unplanned development the river is drying day by day which is a major concern for Dehradun as it can create the problem of water shortage in future. In this research paper we will analyse the current situation of the river Rispana and what factors are responsible for it and what is the role of Government in rejuvenating the river.
