ABSTRACT
The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was introduced with an aim to put an end to the crime of genocide and at the same time punish the persons committing the crime. The paper discusses the reason behind introducing such a convention, the history of the Convention, elements of the crime, the objective the convention seeks to achieve, the effect of introduction of the convention, challenges to the convention and finally suggestions to tackle the challenges. Despite the existence of the convention, the world has witnessed several more cases of genocide, some of which the perpetrators have still not been punished. Despite the many shortcomings of the United Nations and its member states the convention still can be accounted as monumental in preventing genocide. Through this paper one will be able to understand in depth the concept of genocide and how countries are bound by this convention to ensure that the history is not repeated again.
