Misbah Khan, UPES, Dehradun

ABSTRACT

The word “secularism” is a wider concept than what it appears to be. The meaning of secularism can vary from one country to other, however, it stands for the idea of no discrimination and partiality on the basis of religion. Secularism is mentioned in the preamble of the Constitution of India and it is based on the foundation to separate religion and state. It is also related to democracy as it supports the concept that all citizens are equal irrespective of their religious beliefs. No religion is considered superior and no advantages or disadvantages shall be given based on religion. It promotes equality among the people and ensures freedom of religion. It holds great importance as it protects the religious minorities and their interests and brings them parallel to the rest of the citizens. It ensures that a country is fairly governed and the rights of the people are not violated just because they follow or don’t follow a particular religion. In India, secularism intends to protect the separate identity of the state doesn’t allow attaching politics to any religion, and celebrates the diversity of religions in the country with utmost acceptance and respect. Secularism intends at preventing religious domination and safeguards the rights of individuals.
