Constitutional Amendments And Their Impact On Society: An Analysis Of Major Constitutional Amendments Of India

Tushar Kapoor, Swami Shraddhanand College, University of Delhi, India

ABSTRACT

The Constitution of India provides for amendments to ensure that constitutional provisions remain relevant to changing circumstances. Since 1950, Parliament has enacted several amendments dealing with issues such as land reforms, reorganisation of states, emergency powers, local selfgovernment, education, taxation, reservations and political representation. Many of these amendments have a direct impact on public institutions and society, while some have also led to important constitutional disputes before the courts. This study examines major constitutional amendments in India and analyses their background, principal provisions, and impact. It also discusses the role of the Supreme Court in interpreting the amending power of Parliament, particularly through the Basic Structure Doctrine. By examining selected amendments from different periods, the article traces how the Constitution has responded to political, social and economic developments over time and how judicial interpretation has influenced the amendment process.
