Female Foeticide: A Major Challenge To The Indian Society

Vanshika Shukla, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow

ABSTRACT

The paper deals with the recent scenario of female foeticide in the society. Perhaps, the sex selection techniques are providing ample opportunities for female foeticide and socio-economic problems are providing opportunities for female foeticide. Though, law is a powerful instrument of social change, yet law alone cannot eliminate this social problem from the root. However, the real challenge before us and the government officials is to plug the loopholes in the existing laws. It is the responsibility of women's groups, NGOs, mass media academics and medical professionals to play their vital role to prevent the socio-legal problem. It is worth noting that unless this menace is controlled, the country is heading towards a catastrophic gender imbalance, which in turn will affect the country’s social and economic progress.
