Female Genital Mutilation: Problems And Solutions

Kevin Thomas Jose, Symbiosis Law School Hyderabad

ABSTRACT

“Imagine being deceived into being taken to the room of a dark, decrepit and suspicious-looking building located somewhere in the streets of Mumbai. Imagine being betrayed by family members in the name of culture and tradition. Imagine having your genitals mutilated with a hot knife by an untrained midwife. Unfortunately, this is a reality for countless young girls aged 6 to 7. The pain they go through in the name of tradition is unimaginable and spine chilling even to ponder over. However, even in this day and age, it is still a religious practice actively followed in different parts of India. It had not been questioned or faced any adversity till fairly recently. The number of young girls who go through this sickening practice is concerningly high. Even though this number has gradually been decreasing with the progression of society, it has not been completely eradicated as it should be. This research paper will discuss the practice of Female Genital Mutilation, its history in India and the regions where it is currently being practised. It will also talk about the problems and complications it creates and the possible solutions that could be followed to eradicate the practice.”
