ABSTRACT

This research paper delves into the fundamental rights of prisoners within the Indian context, examining the legal, institutional, and human rights frameworks governing prison conditions. It analyzes the Indian prison system's transition from a punitive to a reformative model, highlighting systemic challenges that perpetuate human rights violations. The paper also explores theoretical causes behind criminal behavior and the role of social, economic, and psychological factors. Special emphasis is placed on the status of women prisoners, a section often neglected in prison policy and administration. Drawing on national laws, judicial pronouncements, and international standards, this study argues for a more humane and equitable prison system rooted in justice, dignity, and rehabilitation.
