Dr Jasmine Gill, Advocate, Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh

ABSTRACT

Media trials have become a pervasive phenomenon in contemporary society, where extensive media coverage and public discourse often influence the perception of criminal cases before they reach judicial determination. This paper examines the legal implications of media trials on the criminal justice system, focusing on how premature and biased media reporting can undermine the principles of fair trial, presumption of innocence, and the independence of the judiciary. Exploring legal safeguards and constitutional provisions designed to balance these competing interests. The study also discusses the impact of media trials on the investigation process, jury impartiality, and the overall administration of justice.
