ABSTRACT

This paper explores the United Nations' role in the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide. It examines the historical context of human rights within the UN framework, the key mechanisms and bodies involved, and the challenges faced in enforcing human rights standards. The paper also provides a critical analysis of the effectiveness of UN initiatives and offers recommendations for strengthening the organisation's human rights agenda.

Introduction

The promotion and protection of human rights are fundamental objectives of the United Nations, enshrined in its Charter and various international treaties. Since its inception in 1945, the UN has established numerous mechanisms to address human rights violations and promote global standards. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of these efforts, analyze their impact, and suggest ways to enhance their effectiveness.

Background

The promotion and protection of human rights are central to the mission of the United Nations (UN). Since its founding in 1945, the UN has aimed to foster international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, and achieve international cooperation in solving global problems. One of the core elements of this mission is the advancement of human rights, a principle firmly established in the UN Charter, which emphasizes respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction.
