ABSTRACT

This Article is a study on the instrumental role played by the Supreme Court in the development of sustainable development as a principle in India and the application of the same. ‘Sustainable development’ is the integration of developmental and environmental goals. In other words, it is the striking of balance between environmental security and development. Sustainable development has set inherently set regulations for the manner in which developmental objectives must be planned and carried out.

India is a country known for its rampart pace in developments and robust economical growth, but the country has paid heavily for such growth, which has affected the environment greatly. This might be in the form of irreparable damage to the environment or exploitation of natural resources which may not be available to the future generation.

It ultimately fell upon the shoulders of our courts to uphold and apply the principles of sustainable development and we will be looking at the Supreme Court in particular by using many medium, especially case laws.
