ABSTRACT

Beedi workers are the most vulnerable population working in the unorganized sector in India. Majority of them are women who work from home. The beedi rolling provides financial support livelihood and self- respect for women. This is the only livelihood available to the women in villages in India, particularly in Telangana. Despite, several health hazards, the women prefer to prepare beedis and sell to the contractor. The laws and policies so far facilitated the earning and major source of livelihood. I have studied the status of women in beedi industry in Telangana. The current amendments to Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA Act), may have adverse impact on women beedi workers in India.
