Himanshu Prasad, BA LLB, KIIT, Bhubneshwar

Introduction

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made several announcements for the education sector in the union budget 2022-23.The budget focuses on closing the learning gap through school closures and digital education, from establishing a digital university to expanding the reach of the PM e-vidya programme. The finance minister tried to cover the losses which occurred in the last two years during Covid-19.

The education sector has been allocated Rs 1,04,278 crore in the Union Budget FY23, an increase of 11.86 percent above the revised 2021-22 gross allocation of Rs 93,223 crore. While it is still less than the NEP-recommended 6% of GDP, it is an encouraging indicator and awareness that this sector requires more attention. When we look at the Budget from a sub-sector perspective, we can observe the allocation and thus the trend.
