When Algorithms Go Rogue: The Rise Of AI- Generated Crimes

Lohit Kumar Bhowmick, BCOM LLB, IILS, Siliguri

ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence is transforming our world, but it’s also fueling a wave of clever crimes like deepfakes, phishing scams, and fake digital evidence. In India, cases like the 2025 Hyderabad deepfake scam and the “Babydoll Archi” case show how these crimes hurt people financially and emotionally, while shaking trust in what we see and hear online. Though laws like the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and IT Act are stepping up, we still need better tech, stronger global teamwork, and smarter public awareness to fight back. By blending innovation with care, we can keep AI a force for good while protecting our digital lives. This fight demands we act fast, as criminals evolve quicker than ever. Together, we can build a future where trust and technology go hand in hand. Empowering communities with digital know- how is key to staying ahead. Only through shared effort can we ensure AI doesn’t outsmart our values.
