Artificial Intelligence In The Legal Field And The Indispensable Human Element Legal Ethics Demands

Vishal Gautam, Amity Law School Patna

The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into the legal system heralds a revolution in the administration of justice and the making of decisions. AI is becoming more than just a sci-fi idea; it is a current reality that is changing the legal environment as technology develops. Its use, which offers previously unheard -of precision and efficiency, spans from legal research to predictive analytics in court rulings.

Over the last decade, artificial intelligence (“AI”) has grown increasingly advanced, and numerous industries have incorporated AI programs into their operations. The use of AI is finally beginning to permeate the legal field as well, bringing change to the practice of law. Many of these changes are positive as the use of advanced AI programs has the potential to both improve the quality of legal services and increase individual access to justice. The ability of artificial intelligence to quickly process and evaluate enormous volumes of legal documents is its greatest gift to the legal industry.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered tools may quickly and efficiently retrieve complete and pertinent information for lawyers and judges by sorting through statutes, case laws, and legal precedents, surpassing the speed of traditional research methods. This capacity is especially important in complex cases where there may be an overwhelming amount of paperwork and precedent. AI not only speeds up research but also improves accuracy by seeing connections and patterns that a human might miss. AI is a helpful tool for law scholars and academics as it facilitates their rapid and accurate exploration of legal theories and historical case studies.

The use of AI in the legal field, however, also invokes many legal ethics concerns. Because the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which serve as ethics guidelines for legal practitioners, were written far before advanced AI programs existed, their governance over such programs remains unclear. Nonetheless, it is important to establish how to use AI programs ethically because they will likely play an increasingly important role in the legal field, especially in the context of legal research, legal forms, and contract review. Specific concerns about the duty of lawyers to provide competent representation to clients and AI programs not to engage in the unauthorized practice of law are especially relevant to the use of AI in the legal field.
