Overview Of LGBTQ+ In India

Shivam Sharma & Prerna Bhadana, BA.LLB, Manav Rachna University

INTRODUCTION

The LGBTQ+ community has been at the forefront of civil rights movements for decades. The acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and other sexual2 and gender identities that fall outside of traditional societal norms. Despite the progress made toward equality, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face discrimination, inequality, and marginalization around the world. The history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement has been a long and often challenging one, with struggles for recognition and acceptance, legal protections, and cultural representation. In this article, we will explore the history, struggles, and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the current state of LGBTQ+ rights around the world.

Over time, attitudes towards the LGBTQ community have changed. It is critical to realise that, depending on a person's region, religion, race, and political ideology, legislation and attitudes towards the LGBTQ community differ substantially. While homosexuality is still illegal in some countries, same-sex marriage is legal in others. Similar to how some civilizations accept and encourage the LGBTQ people, others still practise discrimination against them.
