Strengthening Animal Rights: A Legal Crusade For The Voiceless

MV Harshitha, KLE Society’s Law College, Bengaluru

ABSTRACT

“It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.” - Joaquin Phoenix

In times like these when issues concerning themselves with the acts of humans against one another generate extensive debates and discussions around them, those concerning the environment or other creatures of Nature barely see the light of the day. In Man’s blind pursuit of ‘progress’, driven by his greed, the flora and fauna end up being casualties.

This paper is thus an attempt to summon one’s attention towards the burning issue of how Animal Rights are being ignored and violated. An introduction about Man in the ‘State of Nature’ is followed by a picture of the current scenario and threats to animal life, harsh realities and facts , along with legal recommendations to prevent these voiceless souls from being harmed and exploited further.

While the current legal framework has been effective only to a limited extent in addressing the concerns of animal welfare owing to its loopholes, there is a need for awareness among people on why rights of animals must be secured too and stern punishments awarded for the offenders in order to create a society where all forms of life can coexist and thrive harmoniously, each one’s life being equally precious.
